Fiction Forgot About Women in Midlife—We Didn’t
Why do female main characters vanish when life gets truly interesting?
You’ve seen it—novels filled with twenty-something heroines chasing love, careers, and adventure. But what happens after 40? Fiction forgets us. Women in their prime—navigating careers, love, kids, and ambition—vanish from the page. Poof! Gone. But we’re not boring. We’re just getting to the good part.
As a writer and fifty-something woman, I say: BS! We middles are in the juiciest years of our lives. We're finally figuring out who we are and what we want (even if what we want is just five minutes of peace and quiet).

Meet Your Host
GRETCHEN ANTHONY is a speaker, humorist, and author of four novels, including Tired Ladies Take a Stand, which the Minneapolis Star Tribune predicted “will almost certainly be snapped up by books clubs everywhere.” Her previous titles include The Book Haters’ Book Club and Evergreen Tidings from the Baumgartners. Her novel The Kids Are Gonna Ask received the 2021 Alex Award from the American Library. Gretchen also hosts The Middle Book Club, a community dedicated to reading books featuring heroines in the juicy middle years of their lives—because main character energy doesn’t have an expiration date. She lives in Minneapolis with her family, where she stays on the hunt for a good story while listening to 70’s classic rock and scouting a great Manhattan.
